Equipment, Materials (Photoresist, Gases, Wafers, Substrates), Specialty Chemicals
Japan is the global leader in semiconductor materials and critical equipment sub-segments. Japanese companies hold dominant positions in photoresist (Shin-Etsu, JSR, Tokyo Ohka Kogyo), silicon wafers (Shin-Etsu, SUMCO, Siltronic JV), process gases (Kanto Denka, Air Water), quartz materials, and lithography equipment (Nikon, Canon). Tokyo Electron (TEL) is the world's third-largest fab equipment maker. Japan imposed unilateral export controls on 23 semiconductor categories in 2023. TSMC opened its first Japan fab (JASM Kumamoto) in 2024 with Sony and Toyota. Japan's concentration in materials creates strategic leverage points across the entire supply chain.
