The Netherlands hosts ASML, the sole global supplier of EUV lithography machines — the single most critical piece of capital equipment in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Every leading-edge fab (TSMC, Samsung, Intel, Micron) depends exclusively on ASML's EUV systems for sub-7 nm production. Carl Zeiss SMT (Germany) supplies the precision optics; no substitute exists. ASM International (Almere) leads in atomic layer deposition (ALD) systems. Dutch export controls, imposed under US-NL bilateral agreement in 2023, block ASML from supplying advanced DUV scanners to China — a major geopolitical leverage point. The Netherlands is home to IMEC's key European R&D partnership activities.
